  • Taiwan braces for cold snap with warming trend on horizon

Taiwan’s northern and northeastern regions are experiencing cold temperatures, with the mercury hovering around 10 degrees Celsius or lower. Despite a weakening cold wave, warmer weather is expected next week. The Central Weather Administration has issued a cold warning for 17 cities, urging residents to take precautions. Friday’s humidity will decrease, with mostly sunny to cloudy weather in regions south of Hsinchu. However, areas facing the wind, such as the northern coast of Keelung, parts of the east, the Hengchun Peninsula, and the mountainous areas of Taipei, may still see localized rain. Former CWA Weather Forecast Center director Daniel Wu predicts a wind transition from northeastern to easterly and then southeasterly from Monday to Thursday, leading to a daily rise in temperature. This shift will bring clear weather in the west and sporadic, brief rain in the east, with the possibility of fog in western regions and surrounding Kinmen and Matsu islands.

  • Snowfall, hail hit Yangmingshan amid Taiwan’s cold wave

Proactive citizens in Taiwan brace for an intense cold wave, as the Yangmingshan Anbu Weather Station and other areas experience notable accumulations of snow. The coldest period of this strongest cold wave falls on Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures ranging from 5℃ to 14℃. The Central Weather Administration reports hail, followed by rain mixed with snow, and a depth of one centimeter of accumulated snow by 6 a.m. Dress warmly and prioritize safety while driving, especially for those venturing uphill to enjoy the snow scenes. A gradual warming trend is expected to begin on Thursday.

  • CWA issues cold surge advisory for 13 municipalities

Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration (CWA) has issued a cold surge advisory for 13 municipalities on Christmas Day, with temperatures expected to significantly drop by Monday evening. The affected areas include New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi City, Chiayi County, Tainan City, Yilan County, and Kinmen County. Some regions, including Tainan, Yilan, and Kinmen, may experience temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning. However, the cold air mass is expected to weaken throughout the day, leading to a gradual warming trend with temperatures potentially reaching over 20 degrees Celsius. The CWA also predicts a strengthening of the northeast monsoon on Thursday, which will cause another dip in temperatures, particularly on the windward side of northern Taiwan. However, this effect is expected to be short-lived, with milder temperatures forecasted for Friday and Saturday. Nevertheless, there is a possibility of a new cold air mass moving south by Sunday, which could once again lower temperatures in northern Taiwan.
